Dancing in the Night

Looking up into the night sky, the boy could see all that there was to offer. The stars in their majestic form, shining bright in the cloudless night. He could picture his own imaginary world up in the stars. While in his own little world, a figure popped into his field of vision.

"Whatcha doing?" A girl's voice could be heard. It wasn't a familiar voice.

"I'm looking up at the stars." He replied back to her. "But you're blocking my view."

She moved out of the way. "I'm sorry." There was a slight pause. "Can I watch it with you?"

"Sure," He answered and not a minute later she lied next to him.

"What do you see?" She asked him.

He pointed up towards the sky directly at a cluster of stars. "That's a dragon." Then he moved his finger to the cluster next to it. "Then that's the knight fighting it."

"Where's the princess?" She wondered. "There has to be a princess."

He thought about it for awhile, then he pointed higher up. "She's stuck in a tower." He told her. "The knight has to go save her."

"Oh! Instead of fighting the dragon, how about the knight becomes friends with it instead?" She suggested.

"Okay." Was all he said before he heard a familiar voice calling out to him.

"Clay! It's time for supper!" His mother voice echoed into the field where they lied.
He got up, but before he was about to leave, the girl also got up. "Your name's Clay? My name's River." A beat. "Will you be here tomorrow?" She nervously asked.

"I'm here every night," He told her before leaving her. That night on, the both of them kept coming back to that same place where the city lights stayed away and the stars shined their brightest.

There were shining stars that night, but instead the moon lit up the night sky. On nights like these, there was solace.

He was lying in the grass, dressed up from earlier that night, with his eyes closed to feel the calm breeze.

She was approaching also formally dressed. "I knew you'd be here."

"What makes you say that?" He asked her, still having his eyes closed, but he had a grin on his face.
She rolled her eyes, "Oh, well you know... I know you like that."

He still had the grin on his face. "You seemed to have fun dancing."

"Well, duh. It's prom night!" She exclaimed. "I didn't even see you in there. Did you even go?"

"I didn't want to go, but my friends had already bought me my ticket." He Told her.

"Oh, it's that why you're brooding?" She teased at him before going to sit next to him. "Well, did you at least have fun?"

"Not really," he confessed. "I'm not such a party person, if you didn't already know."

"Oh, come on, Clay. It wasn't that bad." She enthused. "Did you at least slow dance?"

"I came with my brother and a bunch of his friends who couldn't get dates," he deadpanned, "and besides, River, no one would want to dance with me even out of pity."

"Hey! That's not true! I'd dance with you." She told him, then after a few seconds she finally noticed the implication. "I mean-"

She was cut off by Clay's laughter. She frowned at him as he was still in his fit of laughter. Her face was heating up and becoming flush from being embarrassed. She rolled her eyes and looked away as he was finally able to get himself to calm down. Once he had finally calmed down, she turned to look at him, only to see him looking back at her with that look on his face.

Him with his grin, joyfully smiling at her. The pure expression in his face that she wanted to know what it meant. The twinkles in his eyes she occasionally sees. Her face flushed again as she turned away from the sight.

Clay grew concerned. "Is something wrong?"

She smiled then faced towards him again. "I have an idea." She stood up and gestured for him to do the same, but he just looked at her. "Come on. Let's slow dance. You and me."

This time he sat up, becoming uncertain about what was about to happen. She gave him her hand, and he took it. She tried helping him up, but he stayed sitting, letting her struggle.

Watching her humor him lessened some of his nervousness, so he finally got up in an manner where she would make herself fall backwards. But she didn't meet the ground, he had a firm grip on her hand, so he kept her from falling.

“You okay?” He asked with concern. She looked up at him, and if it wasn't evident that she liked him, it was now. Seeing him like that played a tune inside of her.

River couldn't talk at the moment, so all she could muster was a nod before being standing up straight again. She looked at him, and he looked at her, while they were still holding each other’s hand. They looked at it for a few seconds before they started to blush and look away from each other, becoming bashful of each other. It wasn’t a secret to the both of them that they fancied each other. It was only a matter of who wanted to change what they had.

She was the one to take away her hand to fetch her phone from a pocket in her dress. “Are you ready to dance?”

He just looked at her with her phone out. “What are you doing?” He didn’t bother to answer her question.

She giggled and presented her phone. “We’re going to need music to dance to.”

Clay was about to let it go, but then an idea cane into his mind, and he placed a hand onto her phone and lowered it down. “How about no music,” he suggested, “just you and me in night sky.” He grinned at her.

His smile was melting her heart, so all she could do was nod. She put her phone back into her dress before it was held by him again. She looked up at him, while he was still smiling.

“My hands were getting cold when yours weren’t in them,” he told her. She laughed because it was corny, and he knew it was but it was worth it because he got to see her smiling face. He let go of her hands again and asked her, “so what do we do now?”

She took a breather before responding back to him. “You put your hand here.” She said while placing his right hand onto her hips. “Then you hold my hand, like so.” Then she grabbed his hand and placed her other hand onto his shoulders.

They stood like that for a while before they laughed at each other’s awkwardness. When they finished laughing, she placed her temple onto his chest stunning him. She breathed in his cologne while leading him in the dance, swaying back and forth, slowly shuffling their feet.

Clay was still stunned from her head on his shoulders. He was stiff in his movements and his other hand was free. The only place he could put it on was her back, but he wasn’t sure if he could. He was scared that if he did then she would come to her senses. He looked down at her and all of his nervousness went away. He gently smiled as he placed his hand on her back all while still dancing to the sound of night.

A few minutes danced passed, and the both of them seemingly had gotten closer than they already were. They were swaying back and forth at their own rhythm, then they stopped. River tilted her head up to look at him, and Clay looked at her with the same expression she had in her face, affection. They stared at each other for what felt like hours. Both of them were hesitant to close the gap of a few inches, so they just stared at each other for what felt like hours. It wasn’t until they recognize the fear they had that it was lost. They were what they wanted, and they are there all this time. Clay smiled at her with the same gentleness, and she looked away, blushing with a smile of her own. He took her chin to make her face him before closing the gap in between them with his lips.

Tonight was lit by the moon as there was no stars in the sky. The moonlight even outshines the brightest star on the fullest night. And on this cloudless night a proposal has to be made.

“Will you marry me?” He said to her as he was crouching on one knee with an open jewelry box. Clay presented her a sterling silver ring. The moon lit the earnest look on his face as he started into her eyes.

River was shocked. She would have never expected for something like this to happen. Her heart was torn when she saw him retrieve the box from his coat. There was only one thought in her mind at that time. “Why now?”

He understood her confusion, and he got up to comfort her. But when he tried to get closer to her, she moved away from him. He didn’t think it would go like this. It was much more happier in his mind. “Tell me if it’s a bad idea.” He said to her. It was meant to be sarcastic but there was some truth to his words.

“It is!” She exclaimed. River was distressed, and Clay knew she was, but there wasn’t anything he could do about it. “Why couldn’t you find a better time to ask?”

He knew exactly why he did it now. “I don’t want to lose you when you go.”

She glared at him. “And you think this is going to make me stay?”

“No, it won’t, but it’s to make sure you come back.” He softly said to her, then he repeated to get again, “so will you marry me?”

She couldn’t stay mad at him, not him. When he dropped down to one knee all she could think about was how charming he was. Only after her initial thoughts she would think of the consequences. “Will you come with me if I say yes?”

Clay became silent. She already knew his answer because, at one point, they had already argued about the subject. It would be futile if he said anything back, but he had something else in mind when he proposed. “We can do the long distance. If it’s us then I know we can.”

She had her doubts, but as he said that, they all just melted away. It wasn’t something she understood, but when it comes to him, then she trusts it’s possible. “Promise me you’ll visit.”

He flashed a charming smile to her. “Of course, so will you marry me now?”

River’s cheeks started to flush at the sight of him smiling. All of a sudden, it was getting hard for her to speak. “Y-yes.”

He held out his hand to her, asking, “may I?” She sheepishly nodded and gave him her hand. He gently held her hand and slid on the ring, her ring. Then he brought hey hand to his lips for a kid before letting go. “How does it look?”

When it was finally on her finger, her eyes were gleaming. She looked at his smiling face, and couldn’t help but smile herself. “You romantic sap,” She told him and all he did was chuckle before he was tackled into a hug. “It’s beautiful.”

He was stunned at first then he melted into the hug. He placed his forehead onto hers, looking deep into her eyes. “Can I kiss you now?”

“You know you don’t have to ask,” She whispered to him, “We’re engaged now, you sap.” He smiled at her words before slowly closing the gap between their lips. The kiss was chaste, but it held a lot of meaning to the both of them.

They simply stayed in their embrace swaying to their own rhythm. If only that night could have lasted forever. They knew what they were getting themselves into. They knew it would be hard, and problems would arise. They weren’t that naïve to not know what the consequences were. All they had was hope for the future and to trust in it. They knew it would be worth it in the end.
